I just saw it again with my 7yr old niece & nephew... Talk about a good villain! Cruella DeVille! (And her name? Cruel Devil?!) I think many good stories - not just fantasy - have some sort of great villain. In OKAY FOR NOW by Gary Schmidt, it's the dad, of all people. In younger books, it's a classmate or neighbor. Yea - gotta love a good villain! I'm not sure how you make the classroom m...Ben,
I'm not sure how you make the classroom more like that little red light. One way you can try, however, is to do what you were doing with that one student - listening to his idas and going with them. Let the students learn what they want to learn. Give them some room in your busy curriculum. This is why I am so passionate about Genius Hour. My students, one day a week, can learn what they want to learn. Throughout the week, they are saying to each other, "You should research that during Genius Hour!" So, so sweet. Little red lights abound... :-)Joy Kirrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08883167887036480979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481810867723635668.post-9722004998795136572012-11-06T12:26:13.632-06:002012-11-06T12:26:13.632-06:00Thanks for the comment, Joy. I've finally got time to let you know w...Hello!
I've finally got time to let you know what we do in 7th grade...
-Some of us use the 25-cent-in-Aug-at-Meijer composition notebook. Some of us are going towards a binder of loose-leaf so grading one entry is easier to take home.
-We have a system... It's a program we use, but we adapt it to writing upside the program as well. In one 40-min block of time (we have another 40 min as well), we teach a targeted writing and/or grammar skill. Then we practice it. Then we write for about 12 min. from a prompt (but sometimes it's a free write or a choice). Then we share and respond.
-We do this 3-4 days a week, and keep all the work in one place.
-Once a week, teachers grade one entry for the skill we were working on (out of 4 pts), give targeted feedback, and then a revision assignment for that same skill.
-We have seen a difference the last few years we've done this. We believe it's working!!
-What works? The specific, targeted feedback!!! Also, as students are writing, we try to go to many of them and give them feedback on the spot for the targeted skill. It's very personalized, and many students thrive.
-We also post excerpts up on bulletin boards, almond with how students have revised their writing. We share thse aloud, as well.

I think that's it... It can be used for different units (narrative, responding to fiction and nonfiction, and creative writing). And, no, we still don't use up the entire composition notebook. Should we? Maybe we aren't writing enough... ?? I hope this helps!
-@JoyKirrJoy Kirrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08883167887036480979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481810867723635668.post-9884041028148498772012-06-14T04:28:55.115-05:002012-06-14T04:28:55.115-05:00I'm in, too, but I don't know what that me...I'm in, too, but I don't know what that means.
:)
KevinDogtraxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16079631702744063837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481810867723635668.post-24239032270424151472012-05-29T06:14:54.214-05:002012-05-29T06:14:54.214-05:00Thank you for sharing this list.
